It made for an interesting spin on the fantasy novels I usually read. I liked that the smoke was what gave people power and not other elements like innate magic. But the intricacies of the politics and the struggle for power really reminded me of GOT. The best way to describe this world is a toned down version of Game of Thrones: involving a less families, a lot less sex, more teenagers and the underbelly of smoke-trading (which is like a drug). So I was excited to finally read something by her.

I had heard good things about the Half Bad Trilogy and only took it off my TBR because I never got around to it.
